A Beginner’s Guide to Meal Prepping
Do you want to get healthier by eating healthier, but the entire process is overwhelming? Never fear, we’re here!
First of all, remember that eating healthier does not automatically remove all of your favorite foods! Having some of your favorite meals or components is the best way to look forward to enjoying food. But another way to keep from getting overwhelmed is to prep your meals in advance, so it’s as simple as just quickly heating them up for those evenings when everyone is on the go!
Ready. Set. MEAL PREP!
Batch Components, Not Meals
Instead of making identical meals, thereby getting really sick of the same protein and veg by Wednesday, make up containers that are easy to mix and match with what you’re feeling that day!
Meal prepping doesn’t necessarily mean the same boring combination. Aim to prep three different proteins (chicken, fish, pork), three complex carbs (rice, beans, potatoes) and 3-4 veggies (green beans, corn, broccoli, asparagus). Mix it up, by making these into a delicious stir-fry with your favorite sauce.
Go for High-Yield, Low-Effort Tactics
Don’t think that you have to separate and cook everything individually. Utilize several sheet plans for different roasted ingredients so you can have it all going at once!
Keep your spices fairly neutral. This allows for day-of vibe changes, from Asian fusion stir fry to taco bowls or even a delicious chimichurri sauce to give your meal that fresh oomph.
Plan to Prep for Twice a Week
Foods sometimes don’t stay great in the fridge all week. Make your plans for a mid-week prep, to make sure your prepped food doesn’t spoil before you get to enjoy it, or plan to freeze it right away and pull out mid-week for the back half of your menu. Keep any sauces or salad dressings measured out on the side (so that the food doesn’t completely lose its consistency). And if you have the ability, go for the glass storage containers, as they do hold up better than plastic and don’t absorb stains or odors.
